The rich crimson red on the Choir of Angels (Red) 1999, by the 20th Century contemporary art artist Liu Ye, as the colour of the backdrop and the singing cherubs add another layer of meaning. It sets a scene that signifies joy and luck in Chinese culture and was reminiscent of revolutionary propaganda. ‘I grew up in a world that was covered up in red – the red sun, the red flag and red scarves. As for green pines and cedars, or sunflowers, they were usually just foils for the symbolism of red,’ recalled Liu Ye.
In this sense, this blue rendition of Angel Chorus, like the red one mentioned, is a tool of reminiscence that displays the artist’s childhood memory of his homeland. However, the use of blue may foretell the development of a period of more internal exploration into an expression that pulls away from the reality.
