Sotheby’s S|2 is thrilled to collaborate with amana (visual communication experts)^ in presenting SHASHIN! Japanese Photography Then/Now at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery from 26 June to 10 July 2015. Featuring over 100 works by a selection of important photographers spanning the last half century, SHASHIN! is the most exciting show of contemporary Japanese photography ever held in Greater China.

Continuously breaking new ground since the seminal post-war period, contemporary Japanese photography presents extraordinary diversity in style, technique and philosophy. Artists from the 1960s to the present have built up a fascinating body of work – a fluid multiplicity of unique visual languages that collectively reflect, represent and reorient contemporary Japanese culture.

SHASHIN! brings together iconic vintage prints by the post-war greats, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama and Eikoh Hosoe. Taking the centre stage is the exclusive launch of Araki’s Hong Kong Kiss series taken during the artist’s first visit to the city shortly before the handover in 1997. These works of masters are placed in dialogue with dynamic creations by internationally acclaimed female photographers such as Mika Ninagawa and Rinko Kawauchi, as well as the next generation of rising stars including Yoshinori Mizutani, Maya Akashika, Kosuke and Nerhol.

What is Shashin?
Shashin simply means “photograph” in Japan and its usage in western parlance is also an attempt to consider photography from Japanese context. The intention is to look at photography from Japan on its own terms.

Nicolas Chow, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Asia, said “SHASHIN! offers a kaleidoscopic view of Japanese photography in the last 50 years and we are particularly excited about showing for the first time exclusively Araki's Hong Kong Kiss series. The contemporary photography market is buoyant and we are committed to developing it here in Hong Kong.”

Araki's Hong Kong Kiss Series
Sotheby’s S|2 is pleased to announce an exclusive launch of Nobuyoshi Araki’s platinum and palladium print

Hong Kong Kiss series taken during the artist’s first visit to the city in spring 1997, before its imminent handover from England to China. The series became a turning point in his career: inspired by his experience in Hong Kong, Araki subsequently travelled to other foreign countries to shoot his very own “Journey Photography”.

Printed on paper for the first time, 52 images from this defining series were carefully selected to present significant moments of the city in face of drastic socio-political changes. Araki’s lens vividly captures the changing cityscapes, recording the tearing down of old structures as well as the everyday lives of citizens.

Contemporary Photography
The contemporary section in SHASHIN! charts a broad range of works varying in style and concept, with each of the young artists conjuring up distinctive and dynamic viewing experience. The selection is led by Mika Ninagawa and Rinko Kawauchi, two female photographers who are well established on the national and international stage. Ninagawa breaks new ground with her rich and moody Noir series, tempering her usual euphoric hues to foreground subtler light and shade; while Kawauchi continues to work magic with texture, light and composition, capturing the quietly exquisite moments of the everyday.

Contributions by the younger artists demonstrate both conceptual and aesthetic strength, including Yoshinori Mizutani’s Colors series depicting the quiet relationships between surfaces, colours, and textures, and his award- winning Tokyo Parrots series that mesmerises with its surreal quirkiness. On the other hand, Kosuke’s masterful manipulation of multi-exposure and superimposition techniques results in uncanny, enigmatic and intense atmospheres; and time seems to run its own course in the images of Maya Akashika, whose everyday scenes are gently warped and suspended in a world separate from reality.

For works that pack a conceptual punch, highlights include Nerhol’s celebrated time-lapse series that seamlessly merges photography and sculpture to effect a multi-dimensional manipulation of temporality.
