A prominent Mexican painter, Diego Rivera (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957), his large frescoes played an important, pioneering role establishing the Mexican mural movement in Mexican art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1931.  

The iconic Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s Sans titre (composition cubiste), painted circa 1916, sold at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art sale in November, 2016. 

As a young artist, Rivera traveled to Europe to continue his artistic training. He lived in Paris for over a decade, where he was immersed in the world of other young artists who had gathered from all over the globe. Rivera’s cubist works from this period – of which Sans titre is a prime example – are often compared to those of Pablo Picasso, with whom he formed a strong friendship after meeting in 1914.
