Following China's opening in the 1980s, although less well known than the 1979 and 1980 'Xingxing' (Star Star) exhibitions in Beijing, the 'Cao Cao' (Grass Society) group exhibition of abstract ink art works in Shanghai was milestone for the emergence of contemporary art in China.

1980 年代中國對外開放,「草草畫社」於上海舉行了首次展覽, 雖不及「星星 美展」於 1979 年及 1980 年於北京舉行的展覽般廣為人知, 但卻是中國當代藝 術誕生與發展的重要里程碑。
