Bowie / Collector #12

Caulfield

Patrick Caulfield r.a. (1936-2005)
FOYER
signed, titled and dated 1973 on the canvas overlap
acrylic on canvas
213 by 213cm.; 84 by 84in.
Executed in 1973.
£400,000-600,000

Often associated with Pop Art, Patrick Caulfield R. A. preferred not be associated with any art movement. Using the black outlines and flat colours of a commercial illustration or billboard painter, Caulfield used still-lives and interiors from traditional genres to find a modern form of representation. Combining sophisticated optical illusions with a photo-realist’s eye for detail, the artist breaks down the viewer’s perception of space, playing between light and dark and line and volume.

Bowie / Collector #11

Bomberg
David Bomberg (1890-1957)
SUNRISE IN THE MOUNTAINS, PICOS DE ASTURIAS
signed and dated 35
oil on canvas
59 by 67cm.; 23¼ by 26½in.
Executed in 1935.
£200,000-300,000
Bomberg was famously expelled from the Slade School of Art for his radical break from artistic convention of that time. Sunrise in the Mountains is part of a small body of work created by Bomberg in the summer of 1935 in the mountains in northern Spain. His experiences as a private in the First World War shook his faith in the machine-age and modernity that had influenced his pre-war abstract works. However his pre-war dynamism is still present in this vertiginous landscape painting, rich colour and impasto brush work. It was this passion and expressive handling of paint that Bomberg would pass on to his students including Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach.

Bowie / Collector #10

Lanyon
Peter Lanyon (1918-1964)
TREVALGAN
signed and dated 51
oil on board
122 by 114cm.; 48 by 45in.
Executed in 1951.
£200,000-300,000

For inspiration Lanyon continuously turned to his native Cornish landscape that he passionately explored, first on foot, then from below through mine-shafts, and then from above in a glider. Later influenced by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, Lanyon’s personal form of abstraction depicts here the area of outstanding natural beauty found in Trevalgan just two miles from his home town of St. Ives.

Bowie / Collector #8

Sottsass

Ettore Sottsass
Casablanca Sideboard, 1981
£4,000-6,000

Breaking with the minimalist aesthetic that characterised furniture design in the 1970s, Ettore Sottsass and the Milan-based Memphis group revolutionised cutting-edge design, introducing fun, humour and strikingly bold colour combinations. The Casablanca Bookcase, from the first Memphis collection in 1981, is considered a defining work of Post-Modern design, with examples held in numerous major museum collections around the world including the V&A in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museo dei Mobile e delle Sculture Lignee, Milan.
