Mao series marked a significant stylistic turning point for Warhol in the 1970s.  The present work belonging to the series of 22 paintings stretched on 50 by 42 in bars during the artist's lifetime is a distinctly wonderful example of his oeuvre. Of the other paintings in this cycle, four are known to be held in the renowned public collections.  Mao was created in 1972 - a crucial moment of global politics where President Nixon visited China and Chairman Mao.  The painting in red and gold carries the highly expressionistic and flamboyant handling of paint as well as the artist's resolution and confidence, transforming Mao to become the newest player on the fashion circuit and a glamorised member of the 1970s pop idols.

An experimental work by one of the iconic painters of the Bokujinkai group who modernised calligraphy in 1950s post-war Japan. For the works by Shiryu Morita, their influence at home preceded the ground-breaking Gutai movement and extended abroad to audiences that embraced the uninhibited freedom of expression in ink.

Following China's opening in the 1980s, although less well known than the 1979 and 1980 'Xingxing' (Star Star) exhibitions in Beijing, the 'Cao Cao' (Grass Society) group exhibition of abstract ink art works in Shanghai was milestone for the emergence of contemporary art in China.

Impressionist & Modern Art - Diego Rivera - Sans Titre

Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera (1886-1957)
SANS TITRE (COMPOSITION CUBISTE), ca 1916
Signed with the initials D.M.R. (lower right)
Oil on canvas
55 x 46.5 cm
A prominent Mexican painter, Diego Rivera (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957), his large frescoes played an important, pioneering role establishing the Mexican mural movement in Mexican art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1931.

The iconic Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s Sans titre (composition cubiste), painted circa 1916, sold at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art sale in November, 2016.

As a young artist, Rivera traveled to Europe to continue his artistic training. He lived in Paris for over a decade, where he was immersed in the world of other young artists who had gathered from all over the globe. Rivera’s cubist works from this period – of which Sans titre is a prime example – are often compared to those of Pablo Picasso, with whom he formed a strong friendship after meeting in 1914.

László Moholy-Nagy

A number of works by artists fundamental to the birth of abstract art in the early-20th century, including László Moholy-Nagy, František Kupka and Wassily Kandinsky. EM1 Telephonbild by Moholy-Nagy that was most recently on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, as part of the acclaimed retrospective Moholy-Nagy, Future Present.

Conceived in 1922 and executed in 1923, EM 1 Telephonbild, acquired by The Museum of Modern Art at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art Evening sales for US$6,087,500 in November, 2016, is a masterwork of 20th-century conceptual art. In the early 1920s, Moholy-Nagy fervently sought a new mode of expression that would place him at the forefront of the avant-garde. In addition to Duchamp and the readymade, Moholy-Nagy turned to the ideal of the engineer-artist and joined in the Constructivist and Productivist belief that easel painting was dead. In its place, industrial technologies could make prototypes of art that would later be produced for the masses. Despite his interest in this avant-garde means of production, the Telephonbild enamel series was Moholy-Nagy’s only painting executed solely by machine.
