A Stellar Line-Up of Outstanding Works that Rank Among the Finest by Artists Including
Manet, Degas, Gauguin, Picasso, Klimt & Malevich
Estimated to Raise a Combined Total of £140 -203 Million / HK$16.8 – 24.36 Million*
Sotheby’s London Impressionist & Modern Evening Sale 7 pm, 24 June 2015

“The forthcoming sale offers a rich range of highly desirable works, including those that rank among the finest by Manet, Degas, Klimt, Malevich, Gauguin and Miro. We are also honoured to have been entrusted with outstanding paintings by heirs to whom the artworks have been successfully restituted, enabling us to present unprecedented opportunities to acquire works that would otherwise not appear on the market,” Helena Newman, Global Co-chairman of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Department said.

MUSEUM-QUALITY MASTERPIECES
Kazimir Malevich, Suprematism, 18th Construction 1915,
Est. £20 – 30 million / HK$240 – 360 million
photo from Sotheby's
Leading the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening sale is one of the most important paintings by Kazimir Malevich to ever appear at auction. Suprematism, 18th Construction, a highlight of the critically acclaimed recent Tate retrospective in London, is appearing at auction for the first time, a century after it was painted, directly from the artist’s family. Suprematism, 18th Construction dates from the height of the artist’s career, a period that marked the epitome of revolutionary abstraction and placed Malevich as one of the most important international artists of the 20th Century. It was held in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, for fifty years before being restituted to the artist’s family.

Édouard Manet, Le bar aux Folies-Bergère
1881, Est. £15 - 20 million / HK$180 - 240 million
photo from Sotheby's

Depicting what is arguably the most famous and iconic image of Manet’s œuvre, Le bar aux Folies- Bergères is the first version of his celebrated oil of the same title, now in the collection of the Courtauld Gallery, London. These were the only two paintings by Manet of the Folies-Bergère, thus it is the only version remaining in private hands. The painting remained in the artist’s personal collection up until his death, after which his famed dealer Paul Durand-Ruel was able to procure the work. The painting was shown to the public in 1905 in the now legendary exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, London, which introduced the British public to Impressionism. Testament to its outstanding quality, it has since been exhibited extensively internationally; most recently featuring as one of the highlights of the National Gallery’s blockbuster exhibition in London Inventing Impressionism: Paul Durand-Ruel and the Modern Art Market.

Edgar Degas,
Petite danseuse de quatorze ans 1922,
Est. £10 - 15 million / HK$120 - 180 million
Petite danseuse de quatorze ans is the most ambitious and iconic of Degas’ works and one of only a handful of bronze casts that remain in private hands - the majority are housed in major international museum collections, including Tate, London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Museé d’Orsay, Paris. Celebrated for the revolutionary nature of its modern sculptural form, this ground-breaking work from the Impressionist period was the only sculpture exhibited during Degas’ lifetime. When the wax model was first seen by audiences in 1881, the unflinching realism of Petite danseuse de quatorze ans excited considerable comment. Rather than showing the graceful poise and elegance expected of the dancer, with this sculpture Degas focused on capturing a momentary glimpse that exposed the relentless work that a ballerina’s performance demands. It was hailed for its modernity as much as it was chastised for its perceived vulgarity.

Gustav Klimt,
Bildnis Gertrud Loew (Gertha Felsöványi) 1902,
Est. £12 – 18 million / HK$144 – 216 million
Gustav Klimt’s exquisite representations of women have led him to become the most celebrated painter of the female portrait of the early 20th-century. This extraordinarily beautiful and captivating portrait Bildnis Gertrud Loew depicts the ethereal figure of Gertrud Loew, later known by her married name Gertha Felsöványi, a member of fin- de-siècle Viennese society, wreathed in diaphanous folds of gossamer fabric. The sale will follows a settlement between the Felsöványi family and The Klimt Foundation, Vienna, and is one of the greatest portraits by the artist to come to auction.

Paul Gauguin,
Nature morte aux mangos
Circa 1891-96,
Est. £10 – 15 million / HK$120 - 180 million
Nature morte aux mangos is thought to have been executed in Tahiti during Gauguin's first trip to the Island. Inspired by the lush environment that surrounded him, the work epitomises the artist’s life-long search for the primitive and displays the same vividness and sensuous atmosphere and the bright, warm palette that characterised his celebrated Tahitian landscapes and figure paintings. Indeed, to a traveller from Europe, mangoes – which grew in abundance in Tahiti – must have seemed symbolic of the rich and colourful landscape of these islands. The fruit of the earth represented a part of the everyday life of the islanders, not only as a source of food but as an offering to the gods, and this is reflected in Gauguin’s work. A fascinating and highly accomplished image of the harmony between the natural and the man-made, Nature morte aux mangos is a powerful testament not only to Gauguin’s own creative vision, but also to the artistic and spiritual ideal of freedom, wilderness and simplicity.

MODERN MASTERS
Pablo Picasso, Deux Personnages (La Lecture) 1934,
Est. £13 – 18 million / HK$156 – 216 million
photo from Sotheby's
This exceptional painting of two women reading by Pablo Picasso comes from the extraordinary group of canvases inspired by his beloved mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. Distinguished by their rich colouration, harmonic curves and sweeping arabesques, these exceptional pictures are renowned as Picasso's most euphoric, fantastical and inspired compositions, and they rank among the most instantly recognisable works of 20th-century art. Among the most evocative of these pictures is Deux personnages, created whenMarie-Thérèsewas firmly at the centre of Picasso's artistic and private universe.

Boundless: Contemporary Art 『無界:當代藝術』拍賣

Keith Haring -Untitled
photo from Sotheby's
Sotheby's held its fifth instalment of Boundless: Contemporary Art Auction on 11 June 2015, offering more than 100 lots estimated at HK$27 million. This auction series features eclectic offerings of contemporary art work across genre, style and period by European and Chinese artists like Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Sam Francis, Georges Mathieu, Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Roger Tallon and Piscasso.

“Continuing the great momentum from the previous sale in January, last night we welcomed a group of enthusiastic collectors who embraced the Boundless concept by competing intensely for the diverse range of Western and Asian art on offer, driving nearly 60% of the lots to sell above high estimate. The strong market interest for works by prominent Western artists continues. Works by Keith Haring performed exceptionally well, among which Untitled (1983) became the top lot of the sale achieving HK$4.16 million / US$533,000, four times its pre-sale estimate; while Dog (1986) attracted fierce competition from 10 bidders, fetching HK$3.2 million / US$410,000, almost six times the pre-sale estimate. Works by Asian artists such as Yayoi Kusama were highly sought after, as were many of the design pieces, among which the specially- curated designer lamps section was 100% sold. With the strong results achieved last night, we look forward to bringing more iconic modern and contemporary art pieces – both Western and Asian – to discerning collectors in the region who wish to infuse art into the everyday life.”

SHASHIN! Japanese Photography Then/Now 日本攝影的歷史與當下

SHASHIN! Japanese Photography Then/Now

Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery
Nobuyoshi Araki, Hong Kong Kiss [HK9001], 1997,
Platinum and palladium print, 76.2 x 111.8 cm
Photo from Sotheby's
Sotheby’s S|2 is thrilled to collaborate with amana (visual communication experts)^ in presenting SHASHIN! Japanese Photography Then/Now at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery from 26 June to 10 July 2015. Featuring over 100 works by a selection of important photographers spanning the last half century, SHASHIN! is the most exciting show of contemporary Japanese photography ever held in Greater China.

Continuously breaking new ground since the seminal post-war period, contemporary Japanese photography presents extraordinary diversity in style, technique and philosophy. Artists from the 1960s to the present have built up a fascinating body of work – a fluid multiplicity of unique visual languages that collectively reflect, represent and reorient contemporary Japanese culture.

SHASHIN! brings together iconic vintage prints by the post-war greats, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama and Eikoh Hosoe. Taking the centre stage is the exclusive launch of Araki’s Hong Kong Kiss series taken during the artist’s first visit to the city shortly before the handover in 1997. These works of masters are placed in dialogue with dynamic creations by internationally acclaimed female photographers such as Mika Ninagawa and Rinko Kawauchi, as well as the next generation of rising stars including Yoshinori Mizutani, Maya Akashika, Kosuke and Nerhol.

What is Shashin?
Shashin simply means “photograph” in Japan and its usage in western parlance is also an attempt to consider photography from Japanese context. The intention is to look at photography from Japan on its own terms.

Nicolas Chow, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Asia, said “SHASHIN! offers a kaleidoscopic view of Japanese photography in the last 50 years and we are particularly excited about showing for the first time exclusively Araki's Hong Kong Kiss series. The contemporary photography market is buoyant and we are committed to developing it here in Hong Kong.”

Araki's Hong Kong Kiss Series
Sotheby’s S|2 is pleased to announce an exclusive launch of Nobuyoshi Araki’s platinum and palladium print

Hong Kong Kiss series taken during the artist’s first visit to the city in spring 1997, before its imminent handover from England to China. The series became a turning point in his career: inspired by his experience in Hong Kong, Araki subsequently travelled to other foreign countries to shoot his very own “Journey Photography”.

Printed on paper for the first time, 52 images from this defining series were carefully selected to present significant moments of the city in face of drastic socio-political changes. Araki’s lens vividly captures the changing cityscapes, recording the tearing down of old structures as well as the everyday lives of citizens.

Contemporary Photography
The contemporary section in SHASHIN! charts a broad range of works varying in style and concept, with each of the young artists conjuring up distinctive and dynamic viewing experience. The selection is led by Mika Ninagawa and Rinko Kawauchi, two female photographers who are well established on the national and international stage. Ninagawa breaks new ground with her rich and moody Noir series, tempering her usual euphoric hues to foreground subtler light and shade; while Kawauchi continues to work magic with texture, light and composition, capturing the quietly exquisite moments of the everyday.

Contributions by the younger artists demonstrate both conceptual and aesthetic strength, including Yoshinori Mizutani’s Colors series depicting the quiet relationships between surfaces, colours, and textures, and his award- winning Tokyo Parrots series that mesmerises with its surreal quirkiness. On the other hand, Kosuke’s masterful manipulation of multi-exposure and superimposition techniques results in uncanny, enigmatic and intense atmospheres; and time seems to run its own course in the images of Maya Akashika, whose everyday scenes are gently warped and suspended in a world separate from reality.

For works that pack a conceptual punch, highlights include Nerhol’s celebrated time-lapse series that seamlessly merges photography and sculpture to effect a multi-dimensional manipulation of temporality.
